How to Reseat Your Desktop's RAM (Memory).

Reseating & Installing Memory (RAM)

Reseating the memory is the process of removing the memory module(s) or “RAM” from their DIMM slots and correctly placing them back into place. This is usually the first step of diagnosing and potentially solving a number of common problems. Here are a few examples symptoms  that can be a result of loose or bad memory:

  • Powers on but does not display anything on the screen

  • Powers on to a green or discolored screen

  • Powers on and produces loud beeping sounds

  • Takes an abnormal amount of time booting past the “splash” or logo screen

  • Reading the incorrect amount of memory in BIOS or Windows

  • PC is posting errors pertaining to memory and or suddenly running abnormally slow

Note: The physical size and locations of the RAM differ from brand and model and whether or not you are using a desktop PC or a laptop. The steps in this guide can also be used for the installation of new or replacement memory sticks.

Reseating and/or Installing Memory in a Desktop PC:

IMPORTANT!!! Before doing ANY maintenance on a PC make sure the computer is completely powered down!

  • Locate the side panel latch or thumb screws for some models

  • Pull latch releasing the side panel.

  • Remove side panel and set aside.

  • Locate Memory (RAM)(May be located under the optical and or hard drives in some small form factor PC’s).

  • Gently release the clips that hold the RAM in place (one on each side) do this for all available memory modules.

  • Carefully replace each memory module back into the DIMM slots located on the motherboard (Be sure to note the location of the notches on both the RAM and the DIMM slots).

  • Press firmly on each side of the memory module until the retaining clips click back into place.

  • Once all memory is securely placed back into the DIMM Slots, you can now power on the pc to test and see if reseating the RAM has resolved the problem. If the PC boots with no issues, you have successfully fixed the problem and you can now replace the side panel.
